In India Livestock sector plays a very important role and Livestock activities provide a year-round stream of income as well as nutrition for the livestock farmers. Also since these activities are primarily dealt with by the women of farming household, progress made in this sector not only empowers the farming households but also becomes a major source for women empowerment in the country.

Since most livestock in India is held by small and marginal farmers, therefore targeting market mechanisms and service delivery mechanisms in India is much more challenging as services will have to be delivered over a large geographical area in a scattered manner. Therefore in order to tap the full potential of the sector need for creation of technology enabled farmer centric digital ecosystem was felt.At present a unique ID in the form of 12 digit bar coded ear tag is being issued to all livestock animals. Utilizing this unique ID database, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying along-with National Dairy Development Board has developed a complete new digital ecosystem under National Digital Livestock Mission.

Primary aim of NDLM is to empower the Farmers by providing them technological tools for fully utilizing Government facilities, schemes and avail the services required for the livestock. For this purpose 1962 Farmer App has been developed.

Main feature of this application are:
 Complete historical details of the animals right from its Date of Birth would be visible at a single place to the farmer having all details of treatment records, test results, vaccination, etc.
 Availability of all types/quality of technologies and related material like semen straws/ embtyo. etc. would be visible to the farmers to encourage them to use latest technologies like Artificial Insemination, Sex sorted semen, Embryo transfer, etc.
 A unique QR code for each farmers is available having owner details as well as for each animal Tag ID attached to their owner IDs.
 Farmers will be able to sale/purchase animals through this application.
 Details of all the schemes/facilities being provided for the farmers will be available in this application.
 Success stories and community building platforms where farmers can exchange ideas about the sector and its practices are also a part of this application.
 Use of Ayurvedic medicine practices are also available for farmers in form of videos and printable documents for their use.

Overall this is a single source of information/tool for a Livestock farmer that they would need for their work.
