Healthy children learn better. People with adequate nutrition are more productive and can gradually create opportunities to break the cycles of poverty and hunger. Malnutrition, in every form, presents significant threats to human health. Today the world faces a double burden of malnutrition that includes both undernutrition and overweight, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Healthy children learn better. Iron deficiency anemia is now the number one cause of lost disability-adjusted life years in adolescent girls globally. Anemia has three major consequences for adolescent girls: (i) decreased school performance (and challenges in concentration); (ii) loss of productivity; and (iii) decreased current and future reproductive health for those that become pregnant.
Adolescents have the highest nutritional needs and provide a second window of opportunity for catch-up growth. While WHO and others formally acknowledge adolescents as a group with specific nutrition needs, until recently, Adolescent Nutrition has been neglected in global and national investment, policy and programming in developing countries.

Worms infect more than one-third of the world’s population, with the most intense infections in children and the poor. In the poorest countries, children are likely to be infected when they stop breastfeeding and continually infected and uninfected for the rest of their lives. Only rarely does infection have acute consequences for children. Instead, the infection is long-term and chronic and can negatively affect all aspects of a child’s development: health, nutrition, cognitive development, learning and educational access and achievement.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person’s weight in kilograms (or pounds) divided by the square of height in meters (or feet). A high BMI can indicate high body fatness. BMI screens for weight categories that may lead to health problems, but it does not diagnose an individual's body fatness or health.
