After the Buddha became enlightened, he went to the Deer Garden in Sarnath near Benares and gave his first sermon.
Believing that others could benefit from his cure for the suffering and helplessness of the human being, Buddha found five of his former companions near the city of Banares (Today Varanasi) and gave his first sermon on "Activating the Wheel of Righteousness." In this sermon, he emphasizes moderation, the virtue of following the "middle way," rejecting both excessive waste and extremism in taking away the world's blessings.
Buddha summarized his teaching as "The Four Noble Truths"; human existence is cursed with conflict and suffering; they arise from selfish human desires; salvation from them is possible; Liberation can be achieved in an eightfold way. The Eightfold Path includes right view, proper thought, the right word, right action, right livelihood, right effort, adequate sensitivity, and right concentration.
In Sanskrit, Buddha was born as the son of King Shuddhodana of Sakya, which borders today's India and Nepal. It is generally accepted that he was born around 563 BC. According to Buddhist traditions, even before this event, Brahmins or high priests of Hinduism had prophesied from a dream of his mother that he would either rule the universe or become a Buddha, that is, a rare and fortunate soul who would attain true enlightenment and align with the greatest truth.
Immediately after his birth, Suddhodana's sage, Asita (Kaladevala), saw marks on the baby's body that indicated he would become a Buddha. So the king began to worship his son. Five days after he was born, they named the boy Siddhartha. It means "one who has achieved his purpose" in Sanskrit. His family name was Gautama. He would also be known as Shakyamuni, "the sage of Shakya."
Buddha repeated the steps of his journey and was admired by kings and sages alike. In the major cities of the Ganges Valley, monasteries were built to house his followers, and a group of nuns was formed. These successes in recruiting companions aroused the envy of other religious leaders. They claimed that he had deceived Gautama by bewitching his comrades, and they tried to corrupt the sangha and eliminate him as well.
