So that you know exactly where you are, the address, the exact GPS coordinates or deg°m's" coordinates and the current sea level are displayed.

You can zoom in on the map or satellite image so that you can orient yourself at certain prominent points.
To switch between satellite image and map display, simply tap on the compass.
