The American dollar or United States dollar is the official currency of the United States, enacted by the Currency Act of 1792. It is divided into 100 cents (¢) and 1000 miles (₥) for solving accounting, trade, and taxation problems. The American dollar is the most widely used currency in the world. In 2004, it was estimated that there were approximately 950 billion US dollars in circulation in the world. 2/3 of this amount is outside the USA. Some countries use the American dollar as their official currency; in some countries, it is the de facto currency, and in British overseas countries, it is used as the sole currency (British Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos Islands).
In 1785, the US Congress adopted the dollar as the currency of the USA. The federal government issued the first paper money nationwide in 1861. Having difficulty financing the Civil War, Congress authorizes the US Treasury to issue non-interest-bearing notes. These banknotes are called "green" because of their color.
Although the dollar has depreciated against the Euro in recent years, it still maintains its first-degree importance when looking at the number of reserves held in the countries' central banks. However, the central banks of some countries, led by the central banks of China and Russia, bring on the agenda to replace a part of the dollar in their reserves with the Euro.
