The app uses your device's built-in sensor magnetometer to detect the electromagnetic field generated by a magnetic metal. When you move your phone a fluctuating magnetic field will be detected by this application.
The application will show the magnetic field level (EMF) in ΞT(microtesla) which is equal to ten times of mG(milligauss).
