Mastermind is a game of code breakers and code makers. Player 1, in this case the computer, creates a code from the available pieces (colors, numbers or words) and keeps that a secret. Player 2, you, must make guesses about the hidden code. After each guess, Player 1 will state how many places had the correct answer in the correct place and how many places had the correct answer but in the wrong place. The game continues until either Player 1 guesses the code or runs out of guesses.
There are three modes of play: colored marbles, numbers and words. Each has a different inherent difficulty. For example, a 6-color puzzle with 4 placements (the classic version of the game) has 1296 possible combinations. A 10-digit number puzzle with the same number of placements has 10,000 possible combinations. The word game requires that each guess is an English word and a dictionary of over 100K English words is used to validate guesses. A smaller list of around 4000 common words is used for code words.
On the right of each guess is a place for the answer pegs. If a peg is black, that means one of the colors, numbers or letters is in the correct place. However, it does not specify which place is correct. If a peg is white, that means one of the colors, numbers, or letters is correct but in the wrong place. Again, it does not specify which.
The app has dials on the main screen to allow a wide range of games from simple and quick to impossible. Try them out.
Happy code breaking!
