Dhanpat Rai Srivastava (31 July 1880 – 8 October 1936), better known by his pen name Munshi Premchand (pronounced [preːm t͡ʃənd̪] ⓘ), was a legendary Indian writer renowned for his contributions to modern Hindustani literature.

A pioneer of Hindi and Urdu social fiction, Premchand broke new ground by addressing critical social issues such as caste hierarchies, the struggles of women, and the hardships faced by laborers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Widely regarded as one of the most celebrated authors of the Indian subcontinent, he played a pivotal role in shaping early 20th-century Hindi literature. His iconic works include Godaan, Karmabhoomi, Gaban, Mansarovar, and Idgah. His literary journey began with the publication of Soz-e-Watan (Sorrow of the Nation), a collection of five short stories, in 1907.

Over his prolific career, Premchand authored more than a dozen novels, around 300 short stories, numerous essays, and translations of significant foreign literary works into Hindi. His writing continues to resonate with readers, offering timeless insights into the social fabric of his era.
