Orienteering 2.0 (OL 2.0) tries to simulate the orienteering sport in a virtual 3D environment. It allows beginner to experience orienteering or to practise some skills with a mobile phone without going to a forest.
2 modes, Event and Training, are available. Training mode has features that let runner practise different skills independently. When ready, a runner can challenge the Event mode, which simulate the real sport as much as possible. That means, the runner has to manual set map with a compass and rotate body to change forward direction.
Simulated orienteering experiences:
- Forest terrain
+ with trees, rocks and bushes
- Cross-country type orienteering
- Control points(CP) punching
- Map with contour lines and common colours
- Set Map
+ with a true compass and requires body rotation to change forward direction
- Step counting
+ fixed 1 step 1 meter
- Clue Sheet
+ show distance in meter between successive CP's in column H
- Result Sheet
- CP's of other course
- Night orienteering
- Orienteering in foggy conditions
Application features
- Game zone (VZ) is a virtual 3D forest
- Compass syncs with the forward direction of VZ
- Event mode simulates the real sport
- Training mode includes 3 assistive features
+ select to show current position on map
+ select manual or auto set map (sync map to compass north)
+ select either Compass Control or Swip screen to rotate VZ direction
- Run app in both portrait or landscape device modes and can change anytime during the game
- Design to running in both mobile phone and tablet
- "Information" page brief some major aspects of the sport and the app.
Note
- before first time run, calibration of device compass may be needed, also ensure no magnetic or metallic objects are around
- only the basic contour lines are shown, i.e. no slope line, form line and, index contour, ...
- to emphasize the sport nature, in Event mode runner can only rotate the body to change direction in the VZ,
so cannot run the game when sitting on a chair
- if the device compass is not working probably, a runner can only use the swipe screen feature in Training mode to change direction
- this App has too much details for most mobile device screens, so we suggest runners take a rest to relax the eyes after each course
- drawing terrain consumes a considerable amount of power, make sure to reserve enough power for the device to perform its primary role.
- we suggest each runner tries at most 5 courses daily, that will keep both the eyes and the device battery healthy.
This app is ads-support, so ads will be shown from time to time, especially during break time.
