REMEDIES – Co-creating strong uptake of REMEDIES for the future of our oceans through deploying plastic litter valorisation and prevention pathways
We believe that our oceans are the lifeblood of our planet, and we have a responsibility to protect and preserve them for future generations. The health of our oceans is crucial not only for the survival of countless marine species, but also for the well-being of human communities around the world.
Our waters are facing significant challenges from plastic and micro-plastic pollution to overfishing to climate change. These challenges are complex and interconnected, and they require a collaborative and innovative approach to overcome.
That’s where REMEDIES comes in.
REMEDIES is an Horizon Europe innovation Program creating innovative solutions and technologies to monitor, collect, prevent and valorise (micro)plastic from our oceans. Our approach is rooted in science, circularity, and community engagement aiming to protect water ecosystems, reduce pollution and develop a climate-neutral blue economy.

Through collaborative, participatory methodologies and citizen science activities we want to create a more plastic-conscious society. We provide opportunities for stakeholders to act, learn and contribute to a plastic litter free and zero-waste future. Moreover, REMEDIES will support, with mentoring, coaching and financial resources, regions to boost the deployment of plastic litter collection and valorisation schemes as well as to push towards the development of zero-waste supply chains through two open calls for associate regions.
We are inviting stakeholders from across the globe to join us in this mission. By working together, we can create a healthier, more sustainable future for our oceans.
Under the “Mission: Restore our Ocean, seas and waters by 2030”, follows the impact-oriented approach established by the Horizon Europe Strategic Plan.
Thus, it has been designed so different results deliver the highest impact possible in the Destination’s expected impacts and the topic’s expected outcomes. This is done considering that REMEDIES will be part of a wider project portfolio under the “Missions” call that will team up to contribute to the major challenges our oceans face.
In overall, through our activities and the planned uptake of solutions we can create a massive impact already on our demo sites by supporting the monitoring and understanding of plastic pathways in the Mediterranean sea, the massive collection of plastic litter, creating business opportunities and in the end preventing conventional plastics that could potentially become plastic litter.
This will of course also have an impact on the European economy per se, directly through businesses and their value chains and indirectly through producing and recovering value through local and intraEuropean supplies. The former externalised cost factors can now be internalised again, which also makes our society more resilient to outside influences like pandemics or wars.
REMEDIES project consists of 3 technical (WP1 Monitoring plastic litter, WP2 Collection of plastic litter, WP3 Circular solutions for prevention of plastic waste) and 4 nontechnical (WP4 Sustainability assessment and optimisation of implemented measures, WP5 Scaling & Replication, WP6 Community engagement, dissemination & communication, WP7 Project Management) work packages.
