Skateboard models called longboards have longer boards. "Old school" boards (modern boards made in the 1970s - 1980s and imitating them today) are usually larger and have only a single tail section. Models from the 1970s had little or no concaves, while models from the 1980s had deeper concaves and more valuable tails.

Most skateboards are concave in the torso at the nose and tail. In concave boards, the top of the sides (where the skater steps on) is hollow. This dimple allows the feet to control the board more quickly and increases flexibility, making the board more stable.
