Sloths are medium-sized mammals living in Central and South America, comprising six species belonging to the families Megalonychidae, Bradypodidae.
While most scientists classify sloths in the suborder Folivora, some group them in the Phyllophaga group. The names of these two groups, the first in Latin and the second in Ancient Greek, mean "leaf-lover."
This practice is usually about sloths living in trees. In past geological times, large ground sloths such as Megatherium lived in South America and parts of North America, but after the arrival of humans, sloths disappeared like some other animals. Some evidence suggests that human actions contributed to the extinction of American megafauna, as with other fauna of North Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and Madagascar. However, the simultaneous climate change that occurred at the end of the Ice Age also played a role in some cases in the destruction of sloth habitats.
Sloths are known as the slowest moving animals of all mammals. It is calculated that it moves at most half a meter per minute. Sloths are among the animals that sleep the most, sleeping 15 to 18 hours a day. In the remaining time, they eat and change the tree branch to which they cling. It is also known that they do not eat much and drink water, so they are recognized as the animals with the least harm to nature. Sloths live in reverse on branches thanks to their sharp claws. They descend to the ground only to change trees or to evacuate.
Even the location of their internal organs is different from that of other mammals, as sloths are constantly hanging upside down. Even sloths' fur grows in the opposite direction. The main sources of death for sloths in Costa Rica, where sloths live, are tripping on electrical wires and poaching. Although sloths are adapted to living in trees, they are good swimmers.
